Nikhilam Navataschramam Dasatah:

Enna onnume puriyalaya…!

It means all from 9 and the last from 10.This sutra helps us to easily calculate the product of two numbers, which are nearer to the powers of 10 like 10,100,1000.

Consider a product of 9 and 7

Step1:Subtract the nearest power of 10 from the two given numbers. Here the two given numbers are 9 and 7.So the nearest power of 10 is 10.

9 -1

7 -3

----------------

----------------

Step2:Add(9 and -3)or (7 and -1)

Write the answer on the left hand side of the final answer space.

9 -1

7 -3

----------------

6

----------------

Step 3:Multiply (-1) and(-3) and write the answer on the right hand side of the final answer space.

9 -1

7 -3

----------------

6 3

----------------

Step4:Just write the left hand side and write hand side of the final answer together to get the product of 9 and 7.

9*7=63

Consider the product of 96 and 94

Here’s the nearest power of 10 is 100.

So we need to subtract the hundred from the two given numbers.

96 -4

94 -6

----------------

90 24

----------------

We looked the numbers that are less than the nearest powers of 10.Will this rule work if the numbers are greater than the nearest powers of 10?

Let’s now take numbers that are greater than the nearest power of 10.

Consider the product of 103 and 109.

Here the nearest power of 10 is 100.

Step1:Subtract 100 from 103 and 109 and write the answer by the side as shown.

103 3

109 9

----------------

----------------

Step2:

103 3

109 9

----------------

112 27

----------------

Here (103+9) or (109+3)=112.

Step3:Therefore ,103*109=11227

Now consider the product of 104 and 102

104 4

102 2

----------------

106 08

----------------

Since we subtract 100 from the given two numbers we write 8 as 08.Had it been 1000 ,we would have written it as 008.

Therefore 104*102=10608.

And ofcourse we have tried for the numbers such as 205 and 207…

Then the procedure is same as follows…

Step1:

205 5

207 7

----------------

----------------

Step2:

205 5

207 7

----------------

2*212 35

----------------

Step3 : Hope u understand….U would multiply the sum of (205+ 7)or(207+5) with the number that is equal to the number in the 100th position…

That is 2*212

Therefore,205*207=42435

As another scenario like this…!

Consider the multiplication of 352*318

Step1:

352 52

318 18

----------------

----------------

Step2:

352 52

318 18

----------------

3*370 =>1110

+ 936

----------------------

111936

----------------------

Just add the 100’s digit in the right hand side multiplication ie:52*18=936 with the 1’s position number here 0.

Therefore the answer is 111936.

If u come across different numbers please post your procedures….!

AN EYE FOR THE NUMBERS…!

Let’s look at an easy method to multiply a 2-digit number by 11.

Consider 52*11.

First write 52 with a space in between 5 2

Next fill the space with the sum of two digits.5 7 2

572 is the required product ! You can check this by regular multiplication.

How about 84?Can we try the same method?Let’s check.

8 4

Adding these two digits gives us 12.If we fill the space with 12,we get 8124.But is this right product…?

No ! Therefore we can’t write it as it is.

If the sum is a 2-digit number , then write the units-digit in the space and carry over the tens-digit.

1

8 2 4

----------------------

9 2 4

----------------------

Now how do we multiply any bigger number with 11? Consider the product 2714*11

Step1:For large numbers it is important to prefix the multiplicand with a 0.

0 2 7 1 4

Step2:Write the units-digit of the multiplicand as the units-digit of the product.

Here ,4 is the units-digit.

0 2 7 1 4

* 1 1

-----------------------

4

---------------------

Step3:Add the units-digit and the tens -digit of the multiplicand.

(4+1=5)

Write the sum as the tens-digit of the product.

0 2 7 1 4

* 1 1

------------

5 4

------------

Step4: Add the tens digit and the hundreds digit of the multiplicand.

(1+7=8)

Write the sum as the hundreds-digit of the product.

0 2 7 1 4

* 1 1

------------

8 5 4

-------------

Step5:Proceed along the same lines for the rest of the digits upto 0 and you have your answer!

0 2 7 1 4

* 1 1

----------

2 9 8 5 4

----------

Now u pls try this for ....

(a) 892456*11

(b)12468927*11

Ok...Friends here am putting a pause 2 my blog with these two amazings...If u r interested, will post u about more amazing facts of mathematics....Until that me signing off....will meet u with another amazing wonder of mathematics....!
